MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Barry University softball team (28-2, 6-0 SSC) completed a Sunshine State Conference sweep over the Lynn Fighting Knights winning both ends of a doubleheader on Wednesday night at Buccaneer Field. The Bucs won the first game 3-0, and then 2-1 in the nightcap.

Ashley Likens went 4-for-6 with two doubles and a solo home run to lead Barry at the plate, while Megan Young (10-2) secured both wins for the Bucs in the circle and added three hits.

In the first game, the Buccaneers scored single runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings for the win. Cristina DeTagle led the first inning off with a walk and back-to-back singles from Likens and Young loaded the bases for the Bucs. Lynn’s pitcher Amber Havnar then hurled a wild pitch that allowed DeTagle to score to give Barry a 1-0 lead. Young went 3-for-3 at the plate to pace the Buccaneer efforts, while Likens added two hits.

In the fourth inning, Holli Davis reached on a catcher’s interference call off Lynn’s Nikki Pallister and later scored on Brittany Anderson’s sacrifice fly to extend the Bucs’ lead. Likens capped off the Bucs’ scoring with a one out solo homer in the third for the 3-0 win.

Young (9-2) tossed the one-hit shutout in the win for the Bucs, struck out nine and walked three. Havnar (8-7) allowed three runs on eight hits and struck out two in the Lynn loss.

In the nightcap, Barry managed to score on two Fighting Knight defensive miscues to take a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Natalie Heeley reached on a throwing error by second baseman Meghan Osbourne and later scored when Anderson reached on a fielder’s choice. Lynn evened the score in the third. Kathryn Trombly led the inning off with a double to right center and then scored on Brittany Gross’ RBI single.

In the bottom of the seventh with two outs, the Buccaneers took advantage of a wild throw by Lynn pitcher Kara Henderson to end the game. Davis reached with a leadoff single and advanced to second on an Ali Perantoni sacrifice bunt. She later reached third on Anderson’s follow-up single and scored on Henderson’s errand pitch to end the game.

Amber Jack tossed the first six innings and gave up one run on four hits for the no-decision. Young (10-2) managed to come in and struck out the side in the seventh to earn the win for Barry. Henderson (4-6) gave up seven Barry hits and allowed two runs in the loss. Likens and Davis each had two hits for Barry, while Brittany Gross added two for Lynn.

The Buccaneers will return to action on Saturday, Mar. 29 in St. Petersburg, Fla. to take on the Eckerd Tritons in SSC action at 7 pm.
