SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The 10th-ranked Barry University women’s tennis team (16-4) clipped the #28 Incarnate Word Cardinals (11-4) by an 8-1 score on Friday afternoon at the Clarence Mabry Tennis Center.
The Buccaneer carried a 2-1 lead after doubles and then swept all six singles flights to take down the Cardinals. The eighth-ranked doubles tandem of Ildiko Csordas and Carline Stevens defeated the Cardinals #1 doubles team Chandra Capozzi and Sarah Carswell 8-2 for the early match lead. The Cardinals evened the match score when Gretchen Trautmann and Erica Engberg defeated Barry’s Angie Werschel and Helen Wisnewski at number two, but Berit Peterson and Olivia Lilien gave the Bucs the edge heading into singles with a 9-7 win at the bottom doubles flight over Alba Passanizi and Nadia Pope.
In singles, 14th-ranked Csordas defeated Capozzi at the top flight 6-1, 6-3, while #26 Stevens pulled out a 6-5, 7-5 win at number two over Passanizi. Both middle flights went three sets with Werschel picked up a 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 win over Pope at #3, while Wisniewski defeated Trautmann 0-6, 6-4, 6-1 at number four. Peterson and Lilien posted two set wins in the bottom two flights to secure the final score, 8-1.
The Buccaneers will return to action on Saturday, Apr. 5 at 10 am taking on Midwestern State at the Clarence Mabry Tennis Center.
