MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The fifth-ranked Barry Buccaneers carried the top-ranked Armstrong Atlantic Pirates to a deciding point before dropping the match 5-4 in men’s action at the Buccaneer Tennis Center on Wednesday.
Davor Zink defeated Jakub Fejfar 6-2, 7-6 (1) at number six singles to carry the match to the Pirates (21-0).
The Bucs (15-4) took the top flight in doubles 9-7 behind second-ranked pair Patrick Rittenauer and Ales Svigelj who beat #8 Tim Johannsen and Rafael Array.
At the second doubles, the Bucs’ Emanuel Fraitzl and Fejfar led 6-3 up two service breaks, but fell to #19 Christian Bergh and Robert Jendelund 8-6. The Pirates (21-0) took a 2-1 advantage in doubles with an 8-3 win by Zink and Paul Bishop over Andrew Sharnov and Roman Werschel.
The teams split the singles, with Barry taking the second, third and fifth flights and the Pirates winning the rest.
Seventh-ranked Johannsen defeated #25 Rittenauer 7-5, 6-1 at the top flight. Svigelj, ranked #20, defeated #23 Jendelund 6-2, 6-3 at number two. At number three, Fraitzl upset #34 Bishop 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. Werschel took the first set from #25 Array 6-3, but the Pirate came back to win the final two sets 6-4, 6-1. At five, Sharnov made short work of Bergh 6-2, 6-3.
The Bucs travel to the Sunshine State Conference Tournament, Apr. 17-20 in Tampa, Fla., then wait word on an NCAA Regional bid.
