LAKELAND, Fla.—The third-seeded Barry Buccaneers fell to top seed Lynn 5-1 in the finals of the Sunshine State Conference Women’s Tennis Tournament on Saturday at the Beerman Tennis Center.
In doubles, the teams split the bottom two flights. At number three, Lynn’s Alisson Siaci and Eleonora Ionozzi clipped Barry’s Olivia Lilien and Berit Peterson 8-3, while Barry’s Helen Wisniewski and Angie Werschel upset the Knights’ 19th-ranked tandem of Magdalena Ekert and Katerina Jiskrova 9-7.
At the top flight, with the doubles lead on the line, the Bucs’ Ildiko Csordas and Caroline Stevens (ITA #8) led 6-3 only to see the Knights’ Victoria Weltz and Alexandra Schunk (ITA #6) rally for a 9-7 win.
The Knights (21-2) closed out the championship with wins at two, four and six singles. Siacci (ITA #39) beat Wisniewski 7-5, 6-4 at number four, while Ionozzi handled Lilien 6-2, 7-5 at number six. Schunk (ITA #8) closed out the match with a three-set win over Stevens at number two 6-3, 3-6, 6-0.
The Bucs and Knights should both earn bids to the NCAA National Tennis Tournament when they are released on May 4.
