MIAMI, Fla. – The Barry University baseball team (30-15) picked up an out of division 13-3 win over the St. Thomas Bobcats (18-18-1) on Wednesday night at Frank R. Esposito Stadium. Barry heads back into Sunshine State Conference play on Friday night against Nova Southeastern.

In just his second start on the year, Brian Mastin tossed five innings giving up only one run, while holding the Bobcats to just four hits to earn his first win of the season.  Yudelmis Hernandez led the Bucs’ offensive punch with four RBI, while Andrew Frezza, Carlos Gomez and John Servido each drove in a pair.

The Buccaneers managed an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning scoring three runs on just one hit. Frezza reached on a two-out hit-by-pitch and then Servidio and Gomez walked to load the bases. Hernandez doubled in the trio of runs to give Barry the lead, but was thrown out at third trying to stretch the hit into a triple.

The Bucs extended their lead to 4-0 in the top of the third when Nick Shaw reached on an error by first baseman J.C. Gil. Shaw later scored on a Gomez RBI single to account for the score.

St. Thomas cut into the Buccaneer lead scoring one run in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, J.C. Perez homered over the 330 foot mark in left field to cut Barry’s lead to 4-1. However, Barry scored a single run off Evan Ashley’s RBI walk in the sixth and another on Hernandez’s sacrifice fly in the seventh to extend the Bucs’ lead to five, 6-1.

After the Bucs two single-run innings though, Barry erupted for five in the eighth to blow the game open getting RBI hits from Brett Rossi, Gomez, and Frezza. Servidio and Manny Pedrozo posted RBI sacrifice flies for two scores. The Bobcats tried to rally scoring since runs in the seventh and ninth innings, but Barry capped the game off with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth for the 13-3 win.

Brian Mastin (1-1) picked up his first win of the season tossing five innings of four-hit, one-run ball and struck out three. Josh Holmes relieved Mastin in the sixth and struck out three with one run allowed. Bobcat starter Jesus Blanco (5-2) walked six and gave up eight runs on 10 hits in the loss.

Gomez went 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of RBI to lead Barry, while Juan Santana went 2-for-5 to lead St. Thomas. Barry finished out the game with 14 hits to the Bobcats six.
