MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—Barry University fell 2-0 to the fifth-ranked Columbus State Cougars on Friday night at Buccaneer Field.

The Bucs came out strong and owned an advantage in possession time early in the first half. But the Cougars pushed an attack up the right side in the ninth minute and Kellie Myles’ cross into the box found Jill Walthall’s head and Walthall flicked the ball past Buccaneer keeper Sami Cromartie.

A long ball up the middle in the 16th minute slipped through the grasp of Cromartie and Stephanie Parrish stole the ball and scored into the empty net.

Neither team could crack the scoreboard for the rest of the game, making the final 2-0.

Cromartie had four saves for the Bucs (0-1-0), while the Cougars (1-0-0) made six saves, two by Monica Sanchez in the first half, three by Kelly Nimmo in the second half and Sarah Hawkins swept a shot by Michelle Tarasiuk in the 18th minute to preserve the shutout.

The Buccaneers return to the pitch on Sunday, Aug. 31 at 1:00 pm to face the Riverhawks of Massachusetts-Lowell.
