Svigelj Wins Singles Championship at ITA Regionals

VALDOSTA, Ga.--Ales Svigelj entered the ITA Regional on Thursaday ranked fifth, but walked out on top on Sunday afternoon.

Svigelj played his way through five matches and three ranked competitors to face off in the championship against Julien Carsuzaa (Lynn) who was the tournament's number one seed. Svigelj beat Carsuzaa with relative ease 7-5, 6-2 to win the ITA Regional championship.

In Doubles action, Emanuel Fraitzl and Andrew Sharnov played Lynn's Alessandro Sarra and Carsuzaa for the championship. Carsuzza got the win this time as he and Sarra beat Fraitzl and Sharnov 8-4. Fraitzl and Sharnov finished second in doubles. 

The men's tennis team returns to action on Friday, Oct. 4 at the Varner Memorial Tournament in Winter Park, Fla.

Day Three Recap

VALDOSTA, Ga.--Ales Svigelj played his way into the championship at the ITA Southeast Region Tournament by winning both of his matches on Saturday.

First, Svigelj beat 2-seed Florian Halb of Valdosta State 6-3, 6-1 in the quarterfinal round. Later in the afternoon, Svigelj coasted past 3-seed Joerg Ekkenga, also of Valdosta State, 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the championship. Svigelj will face Julien Carsuzaa (Lynn) in the championship at 9:00 am on Sunday.

Andrew Sharnov lost his quarterfinal match against Tomas Racak of Lynn 6-3, 6-3. He will play Sean Gunnels of West Florida in the consolation round on Sunday.

In the consolation round, Roman Werschel Beat Noe Losmozos of Florida Tech 8-1. He will play in the consolation quarterfinal against Nicholas Bigler of Florida Southern at 2:30 pm on Saturday.

Also in the consolation round, Emanuel Fraitzl lost to Sean Gunnels.

In doubles, two Barry teams squared off against eachother in the semifinals. Sharnov and Fraitzl beat Roman Werschel and Svigelj  9-8(3) to advance to the championship. They will play Alessandro Sarra and Julien Carsuzaa of Lynn at 4:00 pm on Sunday.

DAY TWO RECAP

VALDOSTA, Ga.—Andrew Sharnov and Ales Svigelj led the Buccaneer men’s tennis team at the ITA Southeast Region Tournament, with both advancing to the quarterfinals on Friday.

Sharnov, the 10th seed, knocked off Lynn’s Alessandro Sarra in three sets 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-4 in the second round. He then advanced over Rollins’ Neil Clausen, who had upset fourth-seed Leos Jelinek of Valdosta State, when Clausen had to retire down 7-6 (3), 2-1. Sharnov will now face sixth seed Tomas Racak of Lynn in the quarterfinals.

Fifth-seeded Svigelj dominated on the way to the quarters. He rolled over West Alabama’s Carlin Tighe 6-1, 6-1, then took down 13th-seed Luis Arboleda of West Florida 6-4, 6-2. He will now face second seed Florian Halb of VSU. Halb defeated Barry’s Emanuel Fraitzl in the round of 16 in three sets 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Fraitzl had beaten Flagler’s Kyle Maloof 6-3, 6-1 in the second round.

Roman Werschel defeated Rollins’ Austin Duvall 6-0, 6-1 in the second round, but then fell to top seed Julien Carsuzaa 7-5, 6-2 in the round of 16.

Marcello D’Armas played a long three-set match with Florida Southern’s Ben Taylor in the second round, but lost 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4).

In the doubles, the Bucs’ second-seeded team of Svigelj and Werschel advanced to the semifinals with wins over Florida Southern’s Brian deMonfort and Nic Bigler 8-6 in the round of 16 and 8-2 over Rollins’ Clausen and Jeff Morris 8-2 in the quarters.

Fraitzel and Sharnov defeated Bill Rockwood and Adrian Tan of Rollins 8-4 in the second round. In the quarterfinals, the Bucs knocked off Valdosta State’s Michael Kuech and Otto Lenhart 8-3 to set up a semi-final battle with their teammates Svigelj and Werschel.

The tournament continues on Saturday and concludes on Sunday.

 

DAY ONE RECAP

 

VALDOSTA, GA--The Barry University men's tennis team opened their season this afternoon at the ITA Regionals in Valdosta, Ga. All competing members play in the round of 64, with winners advancing to the round of 32.

The Bucs' top player, fifth-seed Ales Svigelj beat Jeff Morris of Rollins 7-5, 6-2. He will play at 11:00 am on Friday against Carlin Tighe (UWA).

Emmanuel Fraitzl, the tournament's ninth seed, beat Drew Hollis of Florida Tech 6-0, 6-0. He will play at 11:30 am on Friday against Kyle Maloof (Flagler).
Andrew Sharnov, who enters the tournament ranked tenth, beat Florida Tech's Noe Losmozos 6-4, 7-6, 10-1 to advance. He will play at 9:00 am on Friday against Alessandro Sarra (Lynn).

Roman Werschel advanced to the round of 32 by beating Alvaro de la Torre of West Alabama 6-3, 6-0. He will play Austin Duvall of Rollins at 9:00 am on Friday.

Marcello D'Armas beat Kirk Kucin from Florida Southern 6-0, 6-0 in the first round. He will face Ben Taylor (FSC) at 10:30 am on Friday.

Jakub Fejfar lost to Andrey Pozhidaev of Florida Southern 6-1, 6-1. In the backdraw, Fejfar beat Michael Calloway (St. Leo) 8-1, and Krasimir Atanasov (PBA) 8-4. He will continue play int he backdraw on Friday.

David Barragan lost to Roman Schirmaier of Florida Southern 6-4, 6-1. In the backdraw, he will face Greg Heartt (Florida Southern) at 4:00 pm on Friday.
