Women's Tennis Bounced Out of ITA Regional
LAKELAND, Fla.—The Barry women’s tennis ended the first day of the ITA South Region Tournament on the outside.
 
Sophomore Angie Werschel, the sixth seed, was the only Buccaneers to advance past the first round. Werschel defeated Rollins’ Anita Paskvalin 6-0, 6-3 in the first round, but fell toWest Florida’s Paulina Ojeda 7-6 (6), 6-4 in the second round.
 
Laime Contreras faced Flagler’s Gabriella Ospina in a play-in match, wining 6-0, 6-2, but Fell to Natalia Ramos of Florida Tech 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 in the first round.
 
Junior transfer Yulia Kashelkina also lost in the three sets in the opening round, falling 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 to Nova Southeastern’s Mary Crider.
 
Julie Cadet faced the seven seed Raphael Durante of Valdosta State, falling 6-0, 6-1.
 
All of the Buccaneers moved into the consolation bracket.
 
In doubles, both Buccaneer teams fell in round one. Kashelkina and Werschel, seeded fifth, fell 9-8 (7) West Florida’s Taylor Brewster and Renata Mattos.
 
Cadet and Contreras lost 8-3 to Nova Southeastern’ Ulia Talalenko and Justine Feaster.
 
The tournament continues on Friday and concludes on Sunday.
