ST. LEO, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers fell 3-2 to the Saint Leo Lions in Sunshine State Conference men’s soccer action on Saturday night at University field.

Bruce Cutler converted a penalty kick after Eusebio Montoya was fouled in the box to make the margin of victory in the 62nd minute.

After the Lions claimed a 1-0 lead on a goal by Montoya, the game took a strange turn when head referee Jonathan Dawes clipped ankles with a Barry player in the 24th minute and went down, suffering an apparent shoulder injury. The rest of the game was played with two officials.

Jonathan Glenn gave the Lions (7-5-1, 4-2-0 SSC) a 2-0 lead early in the 34th minute with an assist from Bradon Whitsett.

But Vok Kojic pulled the Bucs (10-4-0, 2-4-0 SSC) to within a goal just 0:21 seconds later. Wendall James took a shot with Lion keeper Griffin Pharr out of position and a Lion defender swept the ball off the line, but left it open on the far post and Kojic slipped through to score.

After Cutler’s penalty kick, Sascha Koettig also converted a penalty to make the final 3-2.

The Saints out-shot the Buccaneers 21-15 and led on goal 10-9. Pharr had five saves for the Lions, while his defense stopped two shots. Devela Gorrick had six saves for the Bucs, while his defense contributed one.

The Bucs now face the Florida Tech Panthers on Wednesday, Oct. 22 in Melbourne, Fla.
