MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—Haley Struthers scored her first career hat-trick to lead the Barry Buccaneers over the St. Thomas Bobcats 3-1 at Buccaneer Field in women’s soccer action Wednesday night.
Struthers, who came off the bench, struck first for the Bucs (9-6-1) in the 29th minute. Emily Bourgoine pushed the ball up the left side and centered the ball over to Struthers who blasted home the goal from the top of the six-yard box.
In the 40th minute, Struthers bent in a free kick on the right wing from 20 yards out for the eventual game winner.
She struck for the third time in the 83rd minute, again with an assist from Bourgoine. Bourgoine slipped a pass through the middle of the Bobcat (1-11-1) defense and Struthers snuck in behind the line and beat STU keeper Maria Mora one on one for the goal.
Lotta Vartia scored for the Bobcats on a 19-yard free kick in the 84th minute. The Bucs were whistled for a hand ball at the top of the penalty box and Vartia bent the kick into the near post around the wall.
Both teams used two keepers. For the Bucs, Danielle Rezendes got the start, making three saves in a scoreless first half. Sami Cromartie relieved her and allowed one goal, while making one save. Denisse Montero allowed two goals while making four saves, while Mora had one save.
The Bucs travel to Melbourne, Fla., on Saturday, Oct. 25 to face the Panthers, before closing out the regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 28 against Rollins at home.
