MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry University volleyball team earned a hard fought win on Saturday night, beating the St. Thomas Bobcats 3-2 in the Health and Sports Center.

Set one saw the Bobcats (11-19) earn the first two points of the game before Barry won nine of the next fourteen points to take a 9-7 lead. The Bucs (15-10, 5-9 SSC) combined for six kills during the run. The game was still tied at 16-16 before the Bucs went on a small run to take a 20-18 lead. St. Thomas tried to stop the Buccaneer charge with a timeout, but the effort proved fruitless as Barry earned five of the next seven points, helped by a Libby Walter ace, to win the set 25-20.

Set two wasn’t nearly as close. The first part of the game stayed close as Barry led 10-9. The Bucs racked up seven of the next 10 points, with the help of three Bobcats errors and three kills by Camilla Pagnan, to go up 17-12. St. Thomas would only earn four more points in the set to Barry’s eight as the Bucs won 25-16. Julie Priester ripped off five service points including an ace to help with the win.

The Bucs stuttered through the next two sets, losing set three 26-28, and set four 22-25, to force a fifth and decisive set.

Set five began with a Bobcats serve which turned into a Pagnan kill. Libby Walters served four service points to help the Bucs to a 4-1 lead. Barry stayed sharp, winning six of the next nine points to go up 10-4. Julie Ridley, Meisje-Sable Burton got involved in the run, giving Barry a kill apiece. St. Thomas got back in the game with a kill and two Buccaneer errors to put the score at 10-7. However, Barry proved too much for the Bobcats and took five of the next eight points off of kills by Ridley, Pagnan and Samara Ferreira; and two Bobcat mistakes. The Bics won the set 15-10, and took the match.

The Buccaneer hitters combined for 62 kills in the match. Meisje-Sable Burton had six blocks, whileRomina Powers added three, two of which were solo. Libby Walter had 40 assists and Lauren Evans helped the defense with 20 digs.

The Buccaneers return to action on Friday, Nov 14 at Florida Southern at 7:00 pm.
