CORAL GABLES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers closed out their pre-season women’s basketball schedule with a 52-49 loss to the Miami Hurricanes in the BankUnited Center on Saturday.

The Buccaneers used a 6-0 run to close to within one point at 50-49 on a pair of free throws by Christina Thompson at 2:04. But on the next possession, the Hurricanes grabbed three offensive rebounds in a row before Shenise Johnson finally drained a layup with 1:11 remaining.

The Bucs had chances over the final minute, but Alisha Sanford missed a layup, then after a UM turnover, Martinez missed a runner in the lane, but got the rebound and kicked it back to Kristy Singletary whose three-pointer at the buzzer fell short.

Miami was tested early, as Barry got off to a quick lead in the first half with the dribble penetration and three-point shooting by Martinez. She took command and ran the point guard position really well, helping the Bucs to control the game early as they established a 9-2 lead to start the game.

The Bucs, whose biggest lead was 12-4 at 13:03 left in the first half after a three-pointer by Princess Bailey, led 18-12 with 8:44 left in the period. But the Hurricanes used a full-court press to run off a 9-2 swing and take their first lead of the game at 21-20 on a jumper by Diane Barnes with 4:03 remaining. They extended their lead to five points at the half after Johnson hit a pair of free throws with nine seconds left.

The Hurricanes maintained a working margin early in the second half and led 43-37 with 8:15 left after a layup by Briyana Blair. But the Bucs scored six straight, five by Mariesa Greene to tie the game at 43-43 with 5:32 to play.

The Hurricanes rebuilt a seven-point advantage behind four points from Johnson, taking a 50-43 lead at 3:51 on Johnson’s free throw.

Bailey and Greene led the Bucs with 10 points each, while Martinez had nine and Thompson and Kia Palmer each had seven in a balanced attack. Freshman Johnson, who was invited to tryout for the US U-19 team, led the ‘Canes with 16 points, while Barnes and Charmaine Clark each had 11.

The Bucs open the regular season on Nov. 15-16 at the Nova Southeastern Shark Tip-off Classic, facing Clayton State on Saturday and St. Augustine on Sunday.
