Defense Propels Women's Basketball to Victory

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Barry University women’s basketball team earned their fifth SSC victory on Wednesday evening, beating Florida Tech 68-57 in the Health and Sports Center.

The Bucs (15-4, 5-3 SSC) got out to a big first half lead, scoring 12 points before the Panthers (14-5, 3-5 SSC) ever scored a field goal. Three pointers by Alexandra Henri and Kristy Singletary helped the Bucs to a 28-5 lead with 5:13 remaining in the half.

The Bucs earned their largest lead of the night off of two Raina Smith free throws to go up 24 points with 1:42 remaining. The Bucs entered halftime with a 22 point lead.

Barry continued its solid defense during the first eight minutes of the second half, up 21 with 13:00 remaining in the second, before the Panthers began to chip into the Buccaneer lead. The Bucs went scoreless during the next two minutes while giving up 10 to the Panthers. A jumper by Lynisha Nelson put the score at 46-35.

The Panthers cut the lead to 59-53 with 3:28 remaining, but were unable to stop a last minute charge by the Buccaneers, as Barry went on to win 68-57.

Lucy Martinez led the Buccaneer scorers with 13 points and added seven blocks. Kia Palmer had 12 points, and Princess Bailey added 10.

The Buccaneers return to action on Saturday, January 31 at 3:00 pm at Saint Leo.
