SAINT LEO, Fla.—A strong second half showing wasn’t enough to give the the Barry University women’s basketball team a win on the road on Saturday afternoon.
The Buccaneers struggled in the first five minutes of the first half, allowing Saint Leo to seven point lead before Princess Bailey hit a layup to put the Bucs on the board. The Lions pushed out to a 27-15 lead with 6:35 remaining as the Buccaneers found it hard to score.
The Lions pushed their lead to 36-21 with 1:34 remaining in the first, and would enter halftime up 37-23.
In the second half, the Bucs used an 8-2 run off of a three-pointer a piece by Bailey and Lucy Martinez and a layup by Alisha Sanford to cut the Saint Leo lead to 39-31.
The Bucs continued to cut into the Lions lead as Kristy Singletary, Mariesa Greene, and Bailey got involved to cut the lead to 41-39 with 14:22 remaining. Seconds later Greene used a layup to tie the game at 41 apiece.
The Bucs first lead came with 12:21 remaining when Sanford laid the ball in after a missed Buccaneer shot to go up 34-41.
The Lions used a three minute Buccaneer scoreless streak to take a 60-58 lead with 31 seconds remaining in the game. With 24 seconds remaining, Singletary converted two foul shots to tie the game at 60-60. Moments later, Saint Leo’s Marquita Fenn hit one of two foul shots to the Lions their first SSC victory.
For the Buccaneers, Bailey had 15 points and Mariesa Greene had 18 points and 15 boards. The Bucs return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at home against Eckerd at 5:30 pm.
