Women's Tennis Ravages D-I Terriers

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry women’s tennis team ravaged the NCAA Division I Wofford Terriers 9-0 to open the season on Sunday at the Buccaneer Tennis Center.

 

The Terriers (0-2) came in short a player at the bottom of the ladder and were down 2-0 before the match even started. But, it wouldn’t have mattered as the Bucs (1-0) played superbly from the top down.

 

At number two doubles, Yulia Kashelkina and Caroline Wendling teamed up to knock out Haley Baird and Abby Cunningham 8-2. Number one doubles was a bit closer as Barry’s Angie Werschel and Laime Contreras were up 5-4 up a break before pulling away for an 8-4 win over Cayley Wetzig and Sabrina Smyers.

 

Needing just one point in singles, the Bucs got it quickly as Wendling made short work of Smyers 6-1, 6-0 at number two. Werschel and Contreras dispatched Wetzig and Cunningham by identical 6-2, 6-2 scores at number one and number four respectively.

 

Kashelkina made a 2-0 day complete with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Baird at number three and Julie Cadet knocked off Mary Elston Heaner 7-6 (2), 6-0 at number five to complete the sweep.

 

The Bucs will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 7 as they open up Sunshine State Conference play with a 9:00 am match against the Saint Leo Lions.
