NEWBERRY, S.C.--The Barry University baseball team picked up its second win of the day on Friday evening, beating the Newberry Indians (5-4) in a 13-3 Debacle.

The Buccaneers (4-1) struck first scoring seven runs in the third inning. The highlight came when Yan Gomes blasted a 480-foot grand slam, the first ever in the history of Newberry’s Smith Road Complex. Later in the inning, Yudelmis Hernandez blasted another homer to bring in three more runs.

The Bucs would score again in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings including a Joel Keefe solo homerun in the seventh inning.

Corey Witkowski (1-0) earned the win for the Bucs, his first of the season. He tossed a complete game, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk, while striking out three. Ernest Castellano (1-1) took the loss for Newberry.

Gomez drone in five runs, while Danny Lima had three hits and three runs.

The Buccaneers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 14 against Newberry at 1:00 pm

GAME ONE:
NEWBERRY, S.C.—The Barry University baseball team earned a last minute victory against the Newberry College Indians in the 12th Inning on Friday night.

Chris Leon singled home Yas Gutierrez with the eventual winning run and Brian Milanes (1-0) worked 3.2 scoreless innings to earn his first win.

The Indians (5-3) scored in the first inning when their leadoff hitter, Thomas Berryhill, earned a single. Three batters later Scott Horvath hit a single to bring him in.

Barry’s (4-1) first run came in the second inning when Yas Gutierrez reached second on a smash to right field. Five batters later, Yan Gomez brought him home.

Gomes drove in three runs, while Gutierrez scored three.
