Men's Golf Opens Spring Season With 12th Place Finish At Matlock

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Barry University men’s golf team remained in 12th place out of 15 teams on the third and final round at the Matlock Invite Tuesday in Lakeland, Fla after finishing with an 897 (308-287-302).

Sophomore Chris Carlin once again paced the Bucs, as he finished in 39th overall carting home a 224 (76-69-79).

Junior Carlos Velez had a solid third round, as he drilled a 74 to finish with a 226 (74-78-74) to place him in a tie for 49th. Freshman Daniel Stapff 226 (79-71-76) and sophomore Guillermo Pumarol 226 (79-72-75) also finished in a tie for 49th with Velez.

Sophomore Diego Tamayo rounded out the team, as he finished in a tie for 68th after shooting a 235 (83-75-77).

Clayton State won the invite by six strokes over Columbus State.
Will Wilcox of Clayton State won the invite with a 205 (68-67-70).

Nova Southeastern and Saint Leo were tops from the Sunshine State Conference, placing sixth with an 874.

Barry will return to action on March 2 and 3 in the Panther Invite at Majors Golf Course in Melbourne, Fla.

Men's Golf Opens Spring Season At Matlock

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Barry University men’s golf team opened the 2009 spring season with a 12th place standing after two rounds in the Matlock Invite at the Lone Palm Golf Course.

The Bucs shot 595 (308-287) +19 and are within six shots of fellow Sunshine State Conference foe Rollins.

Sophomore Chris Carlin made big strides in the second round, as he jumped from a tie for 45th to moving up to a tie for 16th as he lowered his score by seven strokes (76-69= 145) when the second round completed Monday.

Freshman Daniel Stapff also improved later in the day, as after shooting a 79, he came back to complete a 71 in the second round which moved him into a tie for 45th.

Sophomore Guillermo Pumarol also had a strong second round, as he shaved eight strokes off his first round score to finish just one-stroke behind Stapff (79-72= 151).

Junior Carlos Velez (152) and sophomore Diego Tamayo (158) rounded out the scoring.

Barry will conclude the Matlock Invite today with the third round starting this morning.
