Rowing Dominates Stetson Sprints

DELAND, Fla. – The Barry University rowing team had a strong showing at the Stetson Sprints on Saturday.

The Bucs claimed first place in both the varsity 4 and varsity 8, while the novice 4 claimed second place.

“Overall it was a very good day for us,” Bucs head coach Dave Sanderson said. “The Novice 4+ pressed through difficult conditions, passed a couple of boats and finished with a strong second place."

The novice team (Cox- Jen Cortina, Bow- Jedidah Morrell, 2- Courtney Greene, 3- Katie Rogers and Stroke- Renee Forcier) finished with a time of 8:29.6, as Stetson won the novice race with a time of 8:08.8.

Barry then dominated at the varsity races, taking first in both, as the varsity 4 (Cox- Priscilla Donahue, Bow- Rebekah Evans, 2- Elise Carlson, 3- Robin Cascioli and Stroke- Vanessa Viaderro) (8:03.6) finished 17 seconds ahead of second place Stetson.

“The varsity 4 took control early on,” Sanderson said. “Once they took control, they kept it the rest of the race, which was great to see.”

The varsity 8 (Cox- Donahue, Bow- Summerlin Knipe, 2- Rhiannon Doka, 3- Cascioli, 4- Rogers, 5- Evans, 6- Carlson, 7- Forcier and Stroke- Viaderro) was a little closer, as the Bucs finished with a time of 7:08.3, while the University of Florida came in second with a time of 7:11.9.

“The varsity 8 race was the most exciting race of the day, as it was a real battle,” Sanderson said. “It was really close down the stretch, but we were able to step up and come away with the win.”

Barry will return to action on Saturday Mar. 21 when they race Philadelphia University at the Shane Center in Miami.
