MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The seventh-ranked Barry Buccaneers clubbed five home runs to edge the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish 7-6 in baseball action at Feinbloom Field on Tuesday night.
Yan Gomes and Yas Gutierrez each hit two homers, including a pair back-to-back in the fifth inning that gave the Bucs the lead they would never relinquish.
The Sailfish (4-25) jumped on top in the first inning behind a long-ball barrage of their own. Nick Norley and Neil Hardon each belted two-run homers in the frame.
In the bottom of the inning, the Bucs (28-3) trimmed the lead to one. Nick Shaw hit a lead-off homer and Gutierrez followed three batters later with a two-run shot.
In the fifth, Gomes and Gutierrez went back-to-back leading off the inning to put the Bucs up 5-4. Gomes added his second homer, a two-run shot in the sixth inning.
Corey Witkowski (3-0) earned the win in relief. He tossed 6.1 innings giving up two runs on six hits. He walked one and struck out six. Scott Sexton earned his first save with a scoreless ninth.
Taylor McBath (2-3) took the loss for PBA. He gave up five runs on eight hits and five walks, striking out five.
Gutierrez had four hits, Gomes had three, while Shaw, Danny Lima and Joel Keefe each had two for the Bucs. Norley led the Sailfish with three hits, while Hardon had four RBI, including a two-run single in the seventh that cut the lead to one.
The Bucs take on the University of Miami Hurricanes on Wednesday, Apr. 1 at Mark Light Stadium at 6:00 pm.
