MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers split a Sunshine State Conference softball doubleheader with the Florida Southern Moccasins, dropping the first game 5-0, but bouncing back to the final game 6-1.
In the nightcap, the Bucs fell behind 1-0, but took the lead for good in the third inning. Brittany Minton (12-6) loaded the bases with no outs then nicked Amanda Goelz to tie the ball game. Natalie Heeley followed with a two-run single and the Bucs (23-12, 8-4 SSC) never trailed.
The Bucs added a run in the fifth on an RBI double by Jessica Tabor and scored twice in the sixth on an error and a sacrifice fly by Goelz to make a winner of Brianna Smith (8-5). Smith went the distance, allowing a run on six hits and two walks, while striking out nine.
Minton took the loss for FSC (33-11, 11-4 SSC), allowing three runs on two hits and two walks with two strikeouts.
In the opener, Christine Clark (10-3) shut out the Bucs on five hits and a walk and struck out five. Smith took the loss for Barry.
The Bucs play host to the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish on Tuesday, Apr. 7 in a doubleheader starting at 5:00 pm.
