MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—Ashley Likens ripped a two-run single in the fifth inning to power the Barry Buccaneers over the Nova Southeastern Sharks in the first game of a Sunshine State Conference series at Buccaneer Field on Thursday night.

Amber Jack (17-7) weathered a solo homer from NSU’s April Donachie in the second inning to pick up the win for the Bucs (25-13, 9-4 SSC). Jack went the distance, allowing just the one run on five hits. She struck out six and did not walk a batter.

Lexi Sarradet (20-6) took the loss for the Sharks (39-12, 12-7 SSC). She also threw a complete game, surrendering two runs on seven hits. She issued one walk and did not record a strike out.

Donachie gave the Sharks the lead in the second, but it could have been bigger. Lauren Lopez led off the inning with a base hit to left field, but was gunned down on a steal attempt by Barry’s Brittany Anderson.

In the fifth, Anderson drew a lead-off walk and Shyla Rider followed with a base hit to right center. After a sacrifice by Grace Collins put the runners at second and third, Likens lined a shot into center field. Shark centerfielder Rachel Talenfeld made a diving effort but came up short and both runners came around to score, Rider barely beating the throw in from Talenfeld.

The teams conclude the series with a doubleheader on Friday at 1:00 pm.
