Baseball Lowers The Broom On Sharks

DAVIE, Fla. -- The Barry University baseball team lowered the broom on Nova Southeastern Saturday, taking the doubleheader, 8-2, and 10-8, in Sunshine State Conference action.

Game one belonged to the Bucs (37-6, 15-3 SSC) as Barry tallied the first six runs of the game over the course of the first four innings.

The big inning came in the fourth, as Yudelmis Hernandez hit his team-leading 18th home run of the season to begin the frame. Chris Leon continued the power display, as he smacked a two-run shot for his first of three homers on the day to help put Barry ahead 6-0.

Charley Short (10-1) continued his strong season, as the junior right-hander tossed seven innings, allowing just one unearned run, while striking out six.

Game two went back-and-forth, as each team held the lead at different points throughout.

Nova (31-14, 6-12 SSC) started the scoring in the first inning, as Rhys Roberts singled in a pair to give the Sharks first blood and a 2-0 advantage.

Leon homered for the second time on the day in the second, as his three-run blast gave the Bucs' their first lead and his third of they day put the Bucs back ahead by one in the sixth inning.

Danny Lima helped put the game out of reach, thanks to a two-run double to right-center later in the sixth inning to give Barry a 10-7 lead.

Andrew Koubek (3-0) came on in relief in the fifth and worked 2/3 of an inning to record the victory. Bobby Hernandez pitched a solid 1.2 innings to close the door and record his first save of the season, allowing zero runs and striking out two.

With Lynn sweeping Florida Southern, the Bucs now have sole possesion of first in the SSC, a full game and a half ahead of the Mocs.

Barry will play a non-conference game at home against Rollins on Tuesday beginning at 3:30 p.m.
