Men's Golf Finishes In Second Place At SSC Championships

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Barry University men's golf team fell just short of capturing the Sunshine State Conference crown, as Nova Southeastern held on by five-strokes to hold off Barry and win the SSC Tournament Tuesday afternoon.

Nova 848 (290-275-283) bested Barry's 853 (286-280-287) to win the SSC title.

Carlos Velez stayed near the top of the leaderboard on the final round, as his 210 (72-66-72) placed him in third overall. Nova's Greg O' Mahony won the individual crown on a playoff against Florida Southern's Brian Richey, as each player fired a 207.

Chris Carlin had the best final round on the team Tuesday, as his 68 helped him cart home a 212 (74-70-68) and grab seventh overall.

Victor Billskoog's 213 (69-72-72) placed him right behind Carlin and placed him in eighth.

Daniel Stapff 220 (71-72-77) and Preston Roberts 225 (75-75-75) finished in 14th and 25th, respectively.

Barry will now prepare for the Division II Southeast Regional May 4-6 in Florence, Al., at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.

Men's Golf One-Stroke Off Pace Heading Into Final Round

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- Nova Southeastern trimmed the Barry University men's golf team lead from a four-stroke defecit, to a one-stroke lead after two round of the SSC Championships Monday.

Barry 566 (286-280) held the lead after the first round, but a 275 by Nova in the second round dwindled their two round total to 565 (290-275) and a lead heading into the final round. Both teams have a pretty healthy lead on the rest of the field, with Rollins the closest in third, 13-strokes behind the lead.

Carlos Velez caught fire on the second round, as his 66 set the pace for the Bucs and moved him into the second place spot overall with a 138 (72-66).

Victor Billskoog and Daniel Stapff each tallied 72's as Billskoog is in fourth with a 141 (69-72) and Stapff is in a tie for sixth with his 143 (71-72) after two rounds.

Chris Carlin knocked four-shots off his first round score to finish with a 144 (74-70) to snag a tie for ninth and Preston Roberts rounds out the team scoring with a 150 (75-75) which has him in 26th.

Nova's Greg O'Mahony leads the individual leaderboard with a 136 (70-66) including a hole-in-one on the third hole of round two.

Barry will finish the SSC CHampionships with the final round on Tuesday morning.

Men's Golf Off To Solid Start At SSC Championship

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Victor Billskoog is off to a solid start in the Sunshine State Conference Championships, as his 69 (32-37) after the first round has him in a tie for first and the men’s golf team in first overall.

Barry shot a 286 through the first round, with three players currently in the top-10. Nova Southeastern is currently in second, four shots behind the Bucs. Eckerd, Rollins and Lynn round out the teams in the top five, with the three teams all within three-strokes of each other.

Daniel Stapff and Carlos Velez each carted solid opening rounds, as Stapff’s 71 (33-38) has him in a tie for fourth and Velez’s 72 (36-36) has him in a tie for 10th.

Chris Carlin is in a tie for 16th after shooting a 74 (40-34) and Preston Roberts rounds out the group with a 75 (35-40) which has him in a tie for 21st.

The Bucs will wrap up play on the second round later today before finishing with the final round Tuesday morning.
