MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – It was just a matter of time before the record went down.
After hitting his first home run of the day in the sixth inning, Yudelmis Hernandez hit his second of the game in the seventh to break the single season school record for most home runs with 20, leading Barry to a commanding 16-0 non-conference victory over Rollins Tuesday afternoon.
Hernandez’s blast in the seventh inning sailed over the centerfield wall and eclipsed Luis Boullon’s old record of 19 homers set back in 2001.
Barry (38-6) drilled six homers in all, as Manny Pedrozo got things going with his 10th homer of the season on a shot over the left-centerfield wall to help give Barry a 3-0 lead after two.
Yan Gomes continues to add to his school record in RBIs, as he hit his 18th home run of the season and drove in four to put his new total on the season at 79.
Chris Leon also joined the double-figure home run club in the eighth, as his three-run shot gave him 10 bombs on the year, as he now joins Hernandez, Gomes, Yas Gutierrez and Pedrozo all with 10 or more home runs.
With all the offense, freshman left-hander Corey Witkowski (5-0) remained solid on the mound, lasting six innings without giving up a run and striking out four.
The Bucs will jump back into Sunshine State Conference play this Friday when they host Tampa beginning at 6 p.m.
