SAVANNAH, Ga.—The Barry Buccaneers won a pair of five-set matches to complete a perfect run at the 2009 AASU/Chatham Orthopedics Pirate Volleyball Classic on Saturday, beating host Armstrong Atlantic 20-25, 20-25, 25-11, 25-16, 15-12 and snapping Wingate’s 37-match regular season winning streak 25-21, 23-25, 21-25, 25-22, 15-8.

In the first match, the Pirates (6-3) jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the Buccaneers (7-1) rallied for the win. With AASU up two sets to none, Ady Alcantara swung the momentum back to the Bucs by serving 13 straight points, including six service aces, to give Barry a 14-0 lead.

In set four, the Bucs held the Pirates to only four service points, siding out at a 75 percent clip. In the fifth and deciding set, the Pirates led 12-11, but Julia Teixiera blasted home a kill, one of her team-high 16, to earn a side out, then reeled off three straight service aces for the match.

In the final match, the Bucs faced previously unbeaten Wingate (12-1) with the Bulldogs riding a 37-match regular season winning streak. Barry jumped on top in the first set, but the Bulldogs came back to take sets two and three.

The fourth set was a nip and tuck affair, with the teams trading leads throughout. With Wingate up 21-20, however, Teixiera again took over, responding with four kills over the last six points to set up set five.

In the deciding set, the momentum stayed with the Bucs as they knocked down 13 kills, hitting .400, to take the match.

For the day, Teixiera led the team with 34 kills, while Alcantara and Ridley each had 24. Libby Walter had 50 assists, while Julie Priester added 43. Spencer Rigg led the defense with 55 digs. Stefanie Sveiven and Samara Ferreira each had seven blocks.

The Bucs open up the home and Sunshine State Conference portions of the schedule by hosting the Nova Southeastern Sharks on Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 7:00 pm in the Health & Sports Center.
