MIAMI SHORES, Fla.— The Barry University volleyball team was pushed to a five-set loss on Thursday night, falling 3-2 (16-25, 27-25, 20-25, 25-19, 15-8) to Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras.
 
The Bucs (10-8, 2-6 SSC) owned much of set one, pushing out to a 10-4 lead with the help of kills by Julia Ridley, Julia Teixiera, and Samara Ferreira. Barry held the six point lead through 18-12, and went on to win set one 25-16.
 
In set two, the Bucs again took an early lead, going up11-5. Yet the Gamecocks (10-3) went on a 9-4 run to tie it at 14-14. After a timeout, the Bucs took four straight points, to go up 18-14, off of a Ferreira kill and three Gamecock errors. Down 24-22, the game seemed over for Puerto Rico before taking two straight points to tie it at 24-24. After trading points back-and-forth, the Gamecocks went on to win 27-25.
 
In set three, the Bucs and Gamecocks were evenly matched throughout much of the early going, trading points through 9-9. The Bucs went on a 7-3 run to take a 16-12 lead. Teixiera, Ferreira, and Ridley had kills in the run. The Bucs would go on to take set three 25-20.
 
Set four saw the Gamecocks take leads of 13-9 and 20-14 before going on to take the set 25-19.
 
The Bucs got out to a difficult start in the fifth and decisive set, going down 6-2 early. A number of errors would cost Barry the set as they went on to lose 15-8.
 
For the Buccaneers, Teixiera had 19 kills while Ferreira and Stefanie Sveiven had 11 apiece. Libby Walter had 40 assists and Spenser Rigg and Ferreira led the defense.  Rigg had 19 digs while Ferreira had five combined blocks.
 
The Bucs return to action on Wednesday, October 21 at home against Palm Beach Atlantic at 7:00 pm.
