MIAMI Shores, Fla.—The Barry University women’s volleyball team put up a tremendous effort, but dropped a five-set heartbreaker to the #13 Saint Leo Lions in the Health And Sports Center on Friday evening.

In the first set, the Bucs (11-10, 2-7 SSC) stormed out to a quick 9-4 lead off the power hitting of Julia Teixiera, Julia Ridley, and Stefanie Svieven. The Bucs maintained their five point lead through 11-6 and 14-9. The Lions got within two points when Bruno Rocha killed the ball to put the score at 15-13. Yet the Bucs held off the Lions’ offensive attacks, and went on to win set one 25-20.

Set two was tied early at 7-7. At 17-17, the Lions took a slim three point lead and went on to extend the lead to five, winning set two 25-21.

The Bucs were hot out of the gates in set three, going up 7-1, as Ady Alcantara served six straight service points including three straight aces. The Lions bit back, getting within two (9-7) as the result of a Svieven attack error and a Rocha kill.

Up 13-11, the Bucs went on another huge run, taking five straight points off of kills by Teixiera and Alcantara and a pair of Lion errors. The Bucs continued fighting down the stretch and went on to win set three 25-17. Spenser Rigg, Samara Ferreira, Svieven, and Ridley earned kills down the stretch.

In set four, mistakes plagued the Bucs as the Lions won 25-13.

In set five, the teams traded points back-and-forth through 5-5.  Libby Walter and Lovisa Johansson beat the Lions’ blockers to combine for the Buccaneers’ first five points. The Lions took the next four points to go up 9-5. The five point deficit proved too much as the Bucs went on to fall 15-7 in set five.

For the Buccaneers, Teixiera had 14 kills. Svieven earned eight, and Walter, Ridley, and Ferreira had seven apiece. Rigg had 26 digs and Walter added 15. Alcantara, Teixiera, Walter,  Ridley, Ferreira, and Svieven combined for 13 total blocks.

The Bucs return to action tomorrow afternoon Florida Southern in the Health And Sports Center at 4:00 pm.
