MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers pulled away late to defeat the Puerto Rico-Mayaguez Tarzans 68-49 in men’s basketball action in the Health & Sports Center on Saturday.

Erick Nsangou led the Bucs with 21 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Tony Dennison added 16 points. Carlos Arias led the Tarzans with 12 points.

The Bucs (2-0) jumped out in front 10-0 and it appeared to be another typical game against the Puerto Rican teams, who have lost all 23 games against the Bucs over the years. But the Tarzans (0-4) roared back to tie the game at 18-18 with 7:31 to play in the period on a three-pointer by Arias.

The Bucs rallied to carry a 29-24 lead into the locker room. Dennison and Willie Whitfield each had six points in the period.

In the second half, the Tarzans stormed out of the locker room with an 11-2 run over the first five minutes to take a 35-31 lead, the biggest of the game, on a jumper by Arias with 14:35 to play.

Barry responded with 11 unanswered points, capped by an Evan White three-pointer with 11:15 left to go up 42-35.

After a Luis Garcia jumper for the Tarzans made it 60-49 with 2:54 remaining, the Bucs shut them out the rest of the way with Bryan Chiverton and Dennison going four-for-four from the line in the final minute to push the final margin to 19.

The Bucs travel to Davie, Fla., to play in the Nova Southeastern Thanksgiving Classic next weekend, facing Catawba on Friday and West Virginia State on Saturday.
