MIAMI, Fla.—Cold shooting from the floor doomed the Barry Buccaneers as they dropped a 65-43 decision to Florida International in women’s basketball action in U.S. Century Bank Arena Wednesday night.
The Bucs (2-2) connected at 32.7 percent (16-of-49), while FIU (3-4) hit 48.3 percent (28-of-58).
“We had a lot of good looks tonight,” Barry head coach Bill Sullivan said, “but we just couldn’t knock them down.”
The game was tight early, with three ties and two lead changes in the first five minutes. Mariesa Greene hit a layup at the 16:10 mark to give Barry a 7-4 lead, but Elisa Carey’s three-pointer at 15:58 tied the game and the Panthers did not trail again.
Greene led the Bucs with 13 points, while Carey paced FIU with 19. Christina Thompson shook off a season-long shooting slump with three treys for nine points and Yvonne Houston came off the bench with eight points in 12 minutes to back up Greene. Maja Krajacic had a double-double for FIU with 10 points and 11 boards, while Michelle Gonzalez added 10 points and Monkia Bosilj had 12.
The Bucs open Sunshine State Conference play on Saturday, hosting Florida Southern in the Health & Sports Center at 2:00 pm.
