DAVIE, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers rode the one-two punch of Mariesa Greene and Shanna Suttington to a 66-49 win over the Central Missouri Jennies at the 10th Annual Cruzin’ Classic in the Don Taft University Center Saturday night.
The Buccaneer duo combined for 42 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists as Barry (5-3) won for the third straight time.
The Bucs set the tone early, jumping out to a 23-6 lead on Yvonne Houston’s fastbreak jumper with 7:15 left in the first period. The game had some ebb and flow, but the Bucs still had the 17-point margin at the end.
The turning point in the second half came near the five minute mark after the Jennies (6-4) had cut the lead to nine points. The Central Missouri bench was whistled for a technical foul after a personal foul on Taylor Hanson and Christina Thompson and Suttington combined to sink three of four free throws to push the lead back to 12.
Greene led all scorers with 24 points and 10 rebounds, her fifth double-double of the season. Suttington followed up her career-high 21 points on Friday with 18 more on Saturday, including six-of-six shooting from the free throw line. Brittany Slifer, daughter of Jennies’ coach Dave, led Central Missouri with 12 points.
The Bucs are off until after Christmas. They will face Wisconsin Lutheran at Lynn as part of the Lynn Holiday Classic on Wednesday, Dec. 30 at 2:00 pm.
