BOCA RATON, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers exploded for an 86-51 win over the Mansfield Mounties in the first round of the DoubleTree Guest Suites Holiday Classic at Lynn University on Sunday behind a career-high 25 points from Zack Trapp.
The Bucs (8-2) erased a 13-5 deficit with a 30-5 run over a 11:41 stretch in the first half, taking a 35-18 lead on a free throw by Bartas Visinskis with 1:44 left in the period.
In the second half, the Bucs went up by 20 for the first time on a fastbreak dunk by Tony Dennison with 16:24 remaining.
Ryan Callahan cut the lead to 18 with a three-pointer on the Mounties’ (4-3) next possession, but Trapp answered with a trey of his own and the lead never sank below 20 for the rest of the game.
Evan White’s three-pointer with 1:17 to play gave the Bucs their biggest lead, 86-44, before they settled for the 35-point win. The margin was the largest for the Bucs since a 45-point win, 74-29, over Puerto Rico-Cayey on Nov. 25 of last season.
Trapp's career-high 25 points was powered by seven-of-11 shooting from three-point range. Dennison added 16 points and Erick Nsangou had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Yuseff Carr led the Mounties with 14 points and 15 rebounds, while Ryan Callahan added 10 points.
The Bucs will face the Valdosta State Blazers on Monday, Dec. 21 in the final game of the classic. Tipoff is set for 5:00 pm.
