ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers sprinted out to a 10-point lead early in the second half and held off all charges by the Eckerd Tritons to take a 98-87 win in the McArthur Center in Sunshine State Conference men’s basketball action Saturday night.
The Bucs (9-3, 1-1 SSC) led just 45-44 at the half. But after Tony Dennison broke a 47-47 tie at the 19:03 mark with a jumper, the Bucs led the rest of the way. Dennison’s tree-pointer with 14:47 completed an 18-9 run that put Barry up by 10 points. The Tritons (6-4, 0-1 SSC) never got closer than six.
Zach Trapp’s layup with 9:40 remaining gave the Bucs their biggest lead, 78-61.
Erick Nsangou led all scorers with 27 points, while Evan White added 22 off the bench and Dennison had 21. Marvin Davis added 10. For the Tritons, John Harper had 19, Zaronn Cann 17, while Woody Taylor and Lewis Lampley each had 10.
The 98 points were the most for the Buccaneers since they beat Wilmington (Del.) 102-76 on Dec. 20, 2006.
The Bucs are back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 6 at Rollins.
