MIAMI SHORES, Fla.— The Barry University women’s basketball team held it together down the stretch, and went onto beat the Saint Leo Lions 59-57 in the Health & Sports Center on Wednesday night.
The Bucs (13-5, 5-3 SSC) and Lions (11-7, 4-4 SSC) came out slow as the game was tied 12-12 with 12:04 remaining in the first half. The Bucs went on an 18-5 run over the next eight minutes to take a 30-17 lead with 4:13 remaining in the half.
The Bucs entered halftime up 34-26. Christina Thompson was 4-5 from beyond the arc, scoring 12 points in the first half.
Five minutes into the second half the Bucs pushed their lead to 16, 48-32, when Adrienne Hicks hit a lay-up off a five-and-go from Shana Suttington.
Yet the Lions would spend the next 14 minutes cutting down the Buccaneer lead to three, 59-56, with 1:05 remaining in the game. With 2.6 seconds remaining Brittany Carannante converted the first of two foul shots to bring the Lions within a field goal. Carannante missed her second free-throw and the clock expired with the Bucs on top 59-57.
For the Bucs, Mariesa Greene had 20 points and 10 rebounds. Thompson scored 12 points while Tilde Ahlin and Suttington, and Hicks combined for 20.
The Bucs return to action on Saturday, January 30 at Florida Tech at 2:30 pm.
