Women's Tennis Sweeps Spartans

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The ninth-ranked Barry Buccaneers started Sunshine State Conference women’s tennis play with a 9-0 win over the Tampa Spartans at the Buccaneer Tennis Center on Sunday.

The Bucs (2-0, 1-0 SSC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles and didn’t stop there with the winning ways, taking all the singles matches as well.

In his second match in two days, head coach Avi Kigel threw out a complete different look in doubles play than he did the day before. No one in doubles was paired with the same partner as they were the day before.

Barbi Pocza again played at the top doubles position, this time with partner Yulia Kashelkina. Pocza/Kashelkina defeated Tampa’s #1 one due 8-4. Following Pocza and Kashelkina was Angie Werschel and Julie Stas in the #2 spot and rolled to an 8-2 win. Berit Peterson partnered with Darina Yablonskaya to take an 8-1 win in the final doubles group.

In singles play, Werschel played at the top of the lineup and took a 6-1, 6-2 win over Tampa’s Kourtney Stark. Caroline Wendling played just below Werschel and coasted to a 6-0, 6-0 win at #2 and Mia Foicca took a 6-1, 6-1 win at #3. Freshman Juliet Serabien rolled through her singles match 6-0, 6-0 and rounding things out freshman Katarina von Scholl to a 6-1, 7-5 win to complete the sweep.

The Buccaneers showcased the depth of their lineup today while playing a total of 10 players. Barry won a combined 97 games while losing just 20 in a dominating performance.

The match for the Buccaneers is one of the biggest of the season as Barry hosts the #4 Valdosta St. Blazers on Monday. The match starts at 10:00 a.m.
