Softball Sweeps A Pair of Games To Open Chillout

DECATUR, Ala.—The Barry Buccaneers got the 2010 UAH Charger Chillout started with a pair of wins over Gulf South Conference teams, beating the West Alabama Tigers 3-2 and the Delta State Lady Statesmen 1-0 at Wilson Morgan Park on Friday.

In the win over the Tigers, Brianna Smith (5-0) worked five innings, striking out 11 and allowing just one hit to earn the win. Paula Mackin worked two hitless innings to earn her first save. Jessica Tabor had two hits and scored a run, while Sarah Broeseker and Amanda Goelz each drove in one run.

In the win over Statesmen, Mackin (3-0) worked four shutout innings, allowing two hits and two walks, while striking out four to pick up the win. Smith closed the game with three hitless innings, striking out two for her first save.

Smith also scored the only run. She singled to lead off the second inning and went to second on a base hit by Sara Hipson. Both runners moved up on one wild pitch, then Smith scored on a second wild pitch from DSU starter Kate Moreland.

The Bucs will face the host Chargers, ranked number one in the NFCA national poll, at 10:00 am on Saturday, followed by a 2:00 pm match up against Arkansas Tech.
