MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry University women’s basketball team beat Saint Leo 68-51 in the quarterfinal round of the BlueCross and BlueShield of Florida SSC Basketball Tournament on Wednesday night.
The Bucs (20-8) held slim leads throughout the early part of the first half, up by five and six at various times.
With 6:52 remaining in the first half, Adrienne Hicks hit a jumper in the lane to start a 12-0 run and put the Bucs on top 36-15. The Lions (13-15) would score once more before Nadia Tijani drove the lane and hit a six-foot jumper to send the Bucs to halftime with a 38-17 lead.
The Bucs’ defense remained solid through the first nine minutes of the second half, only allowing the Lions 13 points in that time frame.
Barry’s largest lead of the night, 28, came with 11:00 remaining in the game when Tilde Ahlin hit a three-pointer to put the Bucs up 58-30.
Saint Leo made an offensive run in the final minutes, chipping into the Bucs’ lead, but were unable to overcome the deficit. Barry went on to win 68-51.
The Bucs played the Lions twice in the regular season, winning both games by a combined five points. The Bucs won by 17 this time.
For Barry, Mariesa Greene had 20 points and seven rebounds. Christina Thompson had 13 off of 5-8 shooting from three-point land. Hicks chipped in 12 and Ahlin had eight.
The Bucs move on to play Rollins in the semifinal round of the SSC Tournament. In the regular season, the Tars and Bucs split games.
