CARROLLTON, Ga.—The Barry Buccaneers opened the 2010 Wolves Invitational with a split of two games, beating West Alabama 15-8 and falling to #2 Alabama-Huntsville 6-4.
In the opener, Paula Mackin (7-0) went five innings in relief of Brianna Smith, who left in the third inning after being injured running the bases. Mackin allowed five runs (two earned) on six hits and six walks, while striking out seven. She also went three-for-three at the plate, scoring one run and driving in one.
Grace Collins and Sarah Broeseker also had three hits, while Broeseker and Amanda Goelz drove in three runs and Taylor Newman scored three times. The Bucs rapped out a season-high 19 hits.
The Bucs broke open an 8-7 game in the sixth inning with seven runs against Tiger ace Katie Ford. The Bucs scored seven runs on six hits and two walks in the frame, capped by a two-run double from Broeseker. Goelz had two RBI in the inning.
In the nightcap, the Bucs fell behind the Chargers (12-1) 6-0 after the top of the fifth inning, but stormed back to score four in the next two frames before falling 6-4.
Stephany Soto doubled to lead off the fifth inning, the first hit of the game for the Bucs, and scored on a ground out by Broeseker. Jessica Tabor also had an RBI on a ground ball, while Newman squeezed in a run.
The Bucs scored another run in the sixth on two of the Chargers’ eight errors in the game.
Jessica Bevlin (1-1) took the loss for the Bucs. She worked 4.2 innings, allowing six runs (four earned) on five hits and six walks. She struck out four.
The Bucs face Augusta State and Columbus State on Saturday.
