CARROLLTON, Ga.—The Barry Buccaneers dropped a pair of tough one-run losses to Peachbelt Conference teams, 4-3 to Columbus State and 2-1 to #19 Augusta State at the 2010 UWG Wolves Invitational on Saturday.
In the opener, the Cougars (7-10) scored a pair of unearned runs in the first inning. But the Bucs evened the game in the fourth on back-to-back homers by Jessica Tabor and Amanda Goelz.
After the Cougars got a two-run double in the fifth to go up 4-0, Taylor Newman ripped a lead-off homer, the first of her career, in the bottom of the seventh, but that was a close as the Bucs (14-6) could get.
Jessica Bevlin (1-2) took the loss. She went the distance, allowing four runs (two earned) on nine hits and four walks. She struck out five.
In the second game, the Bucs struck first. Sara Hipson drew a lead off walk and, after a pair of bunts, scored on a wild pitch.
The Jags scored twice in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead and held the Bucs off the board the rest of the way to secure the win. Barry had runners at third base with less than two outs in both the sixth and seventh innings, but were unable to cash them in.
The Bucs will take on the host West Georgia Wolves and the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes on Sunday to close the tournament. You can follow all the action live on the Buccaneer Broadcasting Network starting at 9:00 am Eastern time.
