Men's Basketball Soars Into Championship Game
DAVIE, Fla.—The Barry University men’s basketball team earned a spot in the championship game of The BlueCross BlueShield of Florida Sunshine State Conference Basketball Tournament with a 79-61 win over the Florida Southern Mocs on Saturday afternoon.
 
Florida Southern entered the tournament as the #1 seed with a 24-3 regular season record and a 12-3 mark in conference play. The Mocs are ranked #12 in the nation.  
 
The Bucs (19-10) took an immediate lead in the first half, and never looked back. Barry opened the first half on an 8-0 run which was capped off by a Tony Dennison layup.
 
Florida Southern (25-3) fought back, cutting the Buccaneer lead to four, 18-14, with 10:30 remaining in the first half. The Bucs’ largest lead of the first half, 13 points, came three minutes later when Dennison hit a 22-footer to put the Bucs up 29-13. Barry entered halftime on top 36-28.
 
Barry was dominant in the second half, holding Florida Southern to 36.7% from the floor while the Bucs were 12-19 for 63.2%. Barry’s largest lead of 21 came with 6:36 remaining in the game. Zack Trapp hit two free-throws to give the Bucs a 68-47 lead.
 
Florida Southern could do little down the stretch, and the Bucs went on to win 79-61.
 
Four players reached double-digits for the Buccaneers. Dennison had 22 off of 9-13 from the floor. Trapp had 21 off of 5-7 from three-point land. Erick Nsangou and Willie Whitfield combined for 23 points.
 
The Bucs entered the tournament as the #5 seed and beat the Lynn University Knights on Wednesday to get to the semifinal. Barry now moves on to play the Rollins College Tars in the championship game tomorrow at 1:00 pm.
