Women's Basketball Makes It To Conference Championship
DAVIE, Fla.— The Barry University women’s basketball team matched the feat of the men’s team three hours earlier by qualifying for the championship game of the BlueCross BlueShield of Florida Sunshine State Conference Basketball Tournament. The women beat Rollins 62-60 in overtime to make it to the championship tomorrow at 3:30 pm at Nova Southeastern.

The Bucs (21-8) and Tars (20-9) were evenly matched throughout the opening minutes of the first half. With 13: 24 remaining in the first, the Tars began a 10-0 run that resulted in Rollins taking a 17-10 lead.

With 3:10 remaining in the first half, Rollins reached their largest lead of the game, 13, when Kristina Mingos hit a 12-footer. The Tars were up 26-13 and would go into halftime up by eight, 30-22.

The Bucs showed new life in the second half, coming out on a 12-2 run. Christina Thompson hit a three-pointer to give the Bucs the lead 34-32.

The Bucs extended the lead to six, their largest of the game, when Tara O’Malley hit a three with 11:35 remaining in the second to put the Bucs up 43-37.

With 2:27 remaining in the second, Rollins held a slim 50-45 lead. The Bucs spent the final minutes chipping into it and sent the game to overtime when Mariesa Greene hit a layup with 0:24 remaining.

In overtime, Barry jumped out to a 55-52 lead with 4:22 remaining. Yet Rollins fought back, and held their own three point lead, 58-55, with 1:40 to go. Two Greene jumpers gave the Bucs a 59-58 lead with 0:10 to play.

On the ensuing Rollins’ possession, Paris Moore turned the ball over and immediately fouled Adrienne Hicks. Hicks hit both her free-throws to give the Bucs a 61-58 lead. Though Barry fouled Moore with 0:02 remaining, both of her foul shots were not enough to give the Tars the three points they needed to win, and Barry took the game 62-60 after another Hicks foul shot.

For the Buccaneers, Greene had 21 points. Thompson had 12 off of 4-8 from three-point land. Hicks threw in 10.

The Bucs will play either Lynn tomorrow in the championship game of the SSC tournament.
