MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers opened Sunshine State Conference softball action with a 2-1 win over Florida Tech at Buccaneer Field on Saturday night in a pitching duel between Paula Mackin and Tiffany Bishop.

Mackin (10-1), who was perfect through 4.1 innings, picked up the win for the Bucs (18-7, 1-0 SSC) in the circle. She struck out seven and allowed just two hits and a walk, leading to one unearned run. She allowed only one bal out of the infield.

Bishop (4-4) took the loss for the Panthers (11-7, 0-1 SSC), despite not allowing an earned run in a complete game. She gave up four infield singles, walked two and struck out five. She also allowed only one ball out of the infield.

The Bucs got all the runs they would need in the third inning. Taylor Newman led off with a walk and, after a strikeout, Grace Collins pushed a bunt between the pitcher and first baseman and beat the second baseman covering to the bag. After a sacrifice moved both runners, Jessica Tabor hit a shot to Kara Dickinson at third base and her wild throw to first allowed by Newman and Collins to score.

The Panthers got their lone run in the sixth on an RBI single by Sarah Oram.

The series concludes on Sunday, Mar. 14 with a doubleheader starting at 1:00 pm.
