SAVANNAH, Ga.— The Barry women’s tennis team lost their first match of the year to # 1 Armstrong Atlantic 8-1 on Saturday.
The lone win for the Buccaneers came at the number three singles position from senior Yulia Kashelkina with a 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 three-set win over #38 Tina Ronel. Both Caroline Wendling and Mia Fiocca tooktheir matches to the super tie breaker but lost. Wendling posted a 1-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) loss to #15 Gabriella Kovacs and Fiocca lost to #24 Martina Beckmann 5-7, 7-5, 10-5.
Also, in singles play Barbi Pocza lost at the top of the lineup to the #1 player in the nation Sona Novakova 6-2, 6-4. At the number two singles spot, Angie Werschel dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision to #5 Alida Muller-Wehlau. The final singles position saw Berit. Peterson take a 7-5, 6-2 loss to Kathleen Henry.
Doubles play for the Buccaneers resulted in a 0-3 outcome. At the top, Kashelkina and Pocza dropped a 9-8 (7-5) match to the #3 doubles team in the nation of Beckmann and Muller-Wehlau. At the second flight, Fiocca and Werschel dropped an 8-2 match to the #4 team in the land, Kovacs and Novakova. Rounding things out in doubles was the Barry team of Peterson and Julie Stas with an 8-1 loss to the #15 team of Henry and Ronel.
The next match for the Buccaneers is Sunday, March 14, against Augusta State in Savannah, Ga. at 3:00 p.m.
