MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The fifth-ranked Barry Buccaneers stepped up a division and dismantled the NCAA Division I Rutgers Scarlet Knights 6-3 at the Buccaneer Tennis Center on Monday.
The Bucs (10-1) got the match off on the right foot with a clean sweep of doubles. Top pair Barbi Pocza and Yulia Kashelkina blanked Amy Zhang and Jennifer Holzberg 8-0 at number one, while Berit Peterson and Darya Yablonskaya shutout Caitlin Baker and Christine Tran 8-0 at number three. At number two, the Bucs’ Angie Werschel and Mia Fiocca led 6-2 only to see Katherine Arlak and Leonora Slatnick roll off three straight games to narrow the lead to 6-5. The Bucs regrouped to take the final two games and an 8-5 win.
The Bucs won three of the six singles in straight sets. Tenth-ranked Werschel defeated Holzberg 6-4, 6-4 at number two, while #31 Caroline Wendling beat Michelle Green 6-4, 6-2 at number four. At number three, Kashelkina knock off Arlak 6-4, 6-3.
The Knights (7-4) won the remaining matches. Baker swept Juliet Serabien 6-3, 6-1 at number six and Zhang picked up a point at number one when Pocza had to retire trailing 2-1. Slatnick closed out the match with three-set win, 6-4, 0-6, 6-2 over Fiocca.
The Bucs next play NAIA top-ranked Auburn-Montgomery on Thursday, Mar. 18 in Melbourne, Fla.
