Women's Tennis Wears Out the Mocs

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—the Barry women’s tennis team hands the #15 Florida Southern Mocs their second loss of the season and second loss in a row on Sunday with an 8-1 victory.

The Buccaneers swept doubles play, headlined by Barbi Pocza and Yulia Kashelkina downing Florida Southern’s #17 doubles team in the nations of Senka Softic and Agnese Rozite 8-3.

Sophomore Caroline Wendling teamed up with fellow sophomore Julie Stas for the first time this season and landed an 8-5 win over Florida Southern’s Andrea Arguello and Veronika Kovacikova.

Angie Werschel combined forces with Mia Fiocca to post their ninth doubles win of the year over Nora Baertschi and Amanda Carns 8-0. The win takes the Werschel/Fiocca doubles record to 9-2 on the year.

In singles play, Pocza posts her sixth win over a top 25 nationally-ranked player. Pocza defeated #4 Softic 7-6 (7-0), 6-3. Werschel also collects a win against Rozite 7-5, 7-5. On the day, both Kashelkina and Wendling collect a team-leading singles win number 10 for the year. Kashelkina defeated Kovacikova 6-4, 6-4 and Wendling beat Baertschi 6-1, 6-0.

Stas fell to Arguello 6-1, 7-6 (11-9) at the number four singles position and rounding out singles play, Berit Peterson handily defeated Carns of the Mocs 6-0, 6-1.

The women’s tennis team prepares for Tufts next on Thursday, March 25 at home. The match is set for a 3:00 p.m. start at the Buccaneer Tennis Center.
