MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The rubber game of the Sunshine State Conference softball series between Barry and Saint Leo bounced in the Buccaneers favor 6-3 on Sunday at Buccaneer Field.

After splitting the doubleheader on Saturday, the Bucs (23-14, 5-4 SSC) got plenty of offense and just enough defense to come away with the series win.

Taylor Newman and Cassy Zamora both went 3-for-4 at the plate, and figured in four of the Bucs’ six runs with Zamora scoring twice and Newman scoring once and driving in another.

After giving up a run in the top of the first, the Bucs sent 10 batters to the plate in the second inning, scoring four times. Newman and Sarah Broeseker each had RBI singles and Grace Collins added a sacrifice fly.

Zamora scored in the fourth after leading off with a double. She stole third and scored on a fly ball by Jessica Tabor. In the sixth, Zamora led off with a single and went to third on a base hit by Amanda Goelz. Brianna Smith drove her in with a ground ball.

Jessica Bevlin (5-5) earned the win in the circle. She worked 4.1 innings in relief of Smith, giving up a run on three hits and three walks, while striking out three. Paula Mackin worked the final two frames, allowing one run, on a homer by Elysha Agen in the sixth, to earn her second save.

The Bucs travel to Lakeland, Fla., on Thursday and Friday, Apr. 1-2 to face the Florida Southern Moccasins. You can follow all the action on the Buccaneer Broadcasting Network.
