BOCA RATON, Fla.—The fourth-ranked Barry Buccaneers mounted a huge comeback over the second-ranked Lynn Fighting Knights at the Perper Tennis Complex on Tuesday, winning 5-4 to take over first place in the Sunshine State Conference women’s tennis standings.
The Knights (16-2, 5-1 SSC) held a commanding 4-1 lead early in singles and needed just one more point to win, but were unable to get it. Fifth-ranked Barbi Pocza defeated seventh-ranked Katerina Jiskrova 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 at number one singles to clinch the match for Barry (14-2, 7-0 SSC).
The Knights jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles. The Bucs’ sixth-ranked pair of Pocza and Yulia Kashelkina upset the fifth-ranked pair of Magdalena Ekert and Katerina Jiskrova 8-3 at number. But the Knights came back to take the bottom two flights by identical 8-2 scores.
In singles, 18th-ranked Eleonora Ianozzi ripped through Kashelkina 6-1, 6-0 at number three and Tessie Salame made it 4-1 Lynn with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Mia Fiocca at number five.
But Berit Peterson defeated Christine Johnstone 7-6 (7), 6-1 at number six and Caroline Wendling pulled out a three-set 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Jessica Yanoff at number four.
At number two, 12th-ranked Angie Werschel bumped off #16 Elkert 6-4, 7-5 to set up Pocza’s clincher.
The Bucs close out conference play on Wednesday, Apr. 7 against Nova Southeastern, but have already clinch the #1 seed at the SSC Tournament, Apr. 15-17 in Lakeland, Fla.
