LAKELAND, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers rode the arm and bat of Brianna Smith to a 4-3 win the opener of their Sunshine State Conference softball series at Florida Southern’s Barnett Field on Thursday.
Smith (9-3) tossed a complete game and drove in the winning run in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly. She allowed three runs on seven hits, walked six and struck out four.
Trailing 3-2 in the fifth, Jessica Tabor led off with a single and was bunted over to second by Amanda Goelz. Sarah Broeseker followed with a base hit to center field to drive in Tabor and went to second on the throw. She moved to third when Kayla Monroy reached on a error. Then, with runners at the corners, Smith lined a shot into right field that Lindsey Powell somehow came up with, but then had no chance to get Broeseker who scored easily from third.
The Bucs (24-14, 6-4 SSC) jumped out in front in the first inning. Cassy Zamora and Tabor drew one-out walks and scored when Brittaney Alderman (10-8) threw the ball away down the left field line on Zamora’s delayed steal at third. Both runners came around on the error.
The Mocs (19-16. 5-8 SSC) got all their runs in the third inning when four of the first five batters had hits. Bethany Boomer and Erin Foley had bunt singles to lead off the inning. Lindsey Powell followed with a two-run double, and scored one out later on a single by Elli Howell.
Alderman took the loss for the Mocs. She worked 4.1 innings, allowing all four runs (one earned) on four hits and six walks with four strikeouts.
The series concludes on Friday with a doubleheader at 1:00 pm.
