LAKE WORTH, Fla.—The Barry baseball team surrendered only two earned runs, but dropped the game in the bottom of the ninth to the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish by a score of 7-6 on Tuesday.

After falling behind 1-0 in the bottom of the second, Barry came back and captured the lead in the top of the third when Louis Arrizurieta and Nick Shaw scored. The Bucs added several more runs throughout the game and retained the lead until the bottom of the ninth.

PBA’s leadoff man reached on a single in the last frame. Then the next Sailfish batter earned a walk. After a sacrifice bunt advanced those runners to second and third, Barry intentionally walked Tony Livelsberger to load the bases for a possible double play.

With one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, Palm Beach’s DH, Justin Sizemore grounded to Julio Ramos at second. Ramos tossed to Shaw at second for the double play, but as Shaw went to make the catch and the throw to first, the ball slipped through the senior’s hands and fell to the ground. Scott Urbanek scored on the play for the Sailfish to end the game.

Several players for the Bucs had multiple hit games. Shaw went 2-3, Drew Dwelly posted a 2-4 game, Joaquin Valdez went 2-4 and Arrizurieta tallied two hits on four at bats.

On the mound for Barry, Brian Santana received the start and went five complete innings and gave up three runs on four hits. Only one run was charged to Santana. The starter threw 82 pitches, walked two and struck out five.

In relief of Santana, T.J. Mullins contributed three innings and also gave up three runs off four hits. Much like Santana, only one of Mullins’ runs was earned. In the ninth, Tyler King took the mound and earned one out before PBA scored to end to the game. King’s run was, again, unearned.

In the loss, the Buccaneers committed four costly errors.

The next game for Barry is this weekend against #3 Tampa, in Tampa. The series starts Friday, April 16, at 6:00 p.m. with coverage starting at 5:50 p.m. on the Buccaneer Broadcasting Network. The series concludes with a double header on Saturday, April 17 starting at noon.
