MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers (29-20, 11-8 SSC) scored twice in the seventh inning to beat the Tampa Spartans 2-1 in the opener of their Sunshine State Conference softball series on Friday night at Buccaneer Field.

Trailing 1-0 entering the final inning, Barry’s Brianna Smith hit a one-out solo homer, her first of the season to tie the game at 1-1. Then, after two walks, a strikeout and wild pitch put runners at the corners, Grace Collins slapped a ground ball to Spartan second baseman Ashley Carrea and beat out the throw at first to allow Sara Hipson to bring the winning run home.

Smith (13-5) worked a complete game, allowing a run on four hits and three walks, while striking out five. Two of the three walks came in the third inning, including one with the bases loaded to Jessica Tejas to force across Shannon Kelly with the Spartans’ (18-14, 9-7 SSC) only run.

Heather Van Landignham (10-9) took the loss for the Spartans. She went the distance, allowing the two runs on five hits. She walked two and struck out six.

The series concludes with a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 17 at 1:00 pm. You can catch all the action on the Buccaneer Broadcasting Network if you cannot make it to the game.
