Men's Golf Finishes Second At SSC Championship

DAVIE, Fla.—Propelled by individual winner Carlos Velez, the top-ranked Barry University men’s golf team finished second at the Sunshine State Conference Golf Championship on Tuesday afternoon. The Bucs posted an 840 (282-277-281), five strokes shy of winner Florida Southern.
 
Velez, who led after the second round, claimed the top spot after firing a combined 203 (66-68-69). Velez’s first round 66 was the second lowest round of the tournament, and gave him a large enough lead to hold off second place finisher Jude Eustaquio from Florida Southern. The victory is Velez’s first individual win in his collegiate career.
 
For the remaining Buccaneers, Daniel Stapff had another strong tournament finishing tied for seventh with a 209 (70-70-69). Chris Carlin (73-68-74) and Victor Billskoog (75-71-69) each finished with a 215 and a tie for 14th overall. Guillermo Pumarol shot a 220 (73-72-75) to round out the Buccaneer five.
 
Host Nova Southeastern claimed third place after firing an 843 (282-280-281). Lynn took fourth (287-276-281—844) while Rollins earned fifth with an 850 (282-282-286). Saint Leo (876), Tampa (880), Florida Tech (890) and Eckerd (899) rounded out the teams competing.
 
The Bucs now look forward to the NCAA South/Southeast Super Regional on May 3-5, 2010. The Bucs will travel to the Wilson Country Club in Wilson, N.C. for that tournament.
 
DAY ONE RESULTS
 
DAVIE, Fla.—The top-ranked Barry University men’s golf team is in first place after the first two rounds of competition at the Sunshine Sate Conference Golf Championship. The Buccaneers posted a nine-under 559 (282-277) for the lead.
 
Carlos Velez leads the Bucs and is the top finisher for the day with an eight-under 134 (66-68). Following Velez, Nova Southeastern’s Patricio Velez is in second with a 135 (70-65). Two Florida Southern golfers are in the top five; Jude Eustaquio fired a 137 (70-67) for third place and Shelton Smith posted a 139 (70-69) for fourth place. Bobby Bode of Nova Southern is in fourth with a 138 (71-67).
 
For the remaining Buccaneers, Daniel Stapff is tied for seventh having fired a 70 in both of the opening rounds. Chris Carlin is a stroke off of Stapff with a 141 (73-68), alone in eleventh place. Guillermo Pumarol and Victor Billskoog round out the Buccaneer finishers; Pumarol shot a 145 (73-72) while Billskoog is tied for 25th with a 146 (75-71).
 
The teams return to action tomorrow morning to tee off at 8:30 pm for the final round of play.
